Film & Feast is back, and so are we!

February 2, 2016

We hope your 2016 is off to a great start! Transition Bondi is back in full swing, and so is our Film & Feast series, kicking off TONIGHT at Chapel by the Sea with the underwater masterpiece, Planet Ocean! We hope to see you there for a delicious vegan meal followed by a spectacular film about the beauty and mysteries of the sea. RSVP here if you haven’t already. You won’t want to miss this movie! And we have six more inspiring environmental documentaries lined up after that, including the highly acclaimed new climate change film This Changes Everything by journalist Naomi Klein.

March marks our first themed month for Film & Feast: Transport Month! This means films about bicycles, electric cars and other forms of alternative transportation and fuel. Each month will also have a personal challenge, so start getting those biking muscles in shape!

On February 13, you’ll find Transition Bondi fixing bikes and lending out reusable coffee mugs at the Bondi Farmers Market, and on February 14, we’ll be spending our Valentine’s Day giving love to the garden at 241 Bondi Road to lay the foundation for the community garden project that will roll out later this year. Check out our calendar of events for all the deets and dates!

This message is just to whet your appetite; we’ll be back soon with a full February newsletter–featuring more exciting events and announcements as well as old favourites like our Volunteer of the Month profile. In the meantime, we look forward to reconnecting and gearing up for a jam-packed 2016!

MARCH IS TRANSPORT MONTH!

In attempt to delve deeper into the issues affecting our community and planet, Transition Bondi is introducing themed months in 2016 to coincide with our weekly Film & Feast events. March is Transport Month, during which we’ll screen documentaries about cycling and alternative transportation to shed light on both the challenges of our fossil fuel-based transport system and the progress that’s been made over the past few decades. Transport Month will commence on March 2 withBicycle the Film, an entertaining story about the modern bicycle, its birth, decline and rebirth in the land of its invention: Britain. After the film, we’ll discuss the state of cycling in Sydney, including the controversial new laws and penalties introduced recently by the NSW government.

Electric and hybrid cars will also take center stage when we show Who Killed the Electric Car? and Revenge of the Electric Car. The rest of the month is still being planned out so let us know if you have any ideas for fantastic films or speakers relating to the theme of alternative transport, or future themes such as Energy, Permaculture and Water. Email info@transitionbondi.org with any suggestions or to volunteer in the kitchen!

PLANTING THE SEEDS OF COMMUNITY

Have you heard the big news? Transition Bondi is building a community garden at 241 Bondi Road, and we raised more than $20,000 in a crowdfunding campaign last year to do so! If you haven’t seen updates about the garden in a while, that’s because it’s still being envisioned, which is taking a little longer than expected since it’s a big project that we want to make a huge success! Rest assured that we’re thinking, talking and designing away so we can finalise a blueprint and start building the garden soon. Our first Dig Day will be held on Valentines Day, February 14, for anyone interested in helping out or learning more about the community garden. Keep tabs on the garden’s Facebook page for regular updates. If you have gardening, landscaping or permaculture design skills, we’d especially love to hear from you!
