The idea was simple: borrow a mug, enjoy coffee and help reduce waste! Aussies throw 1 billion takeaway coffee cups into the landfill each year. We thought that was criminal. So in 2011, the Bondi Muggers set up a mug library at the Bondi Beach Farmers Market to spread awareness about paper and plastic pollution and to inspire positive behaviour change in Bondi Beach.
After five years of pushing porcelain, the coffee kiosk at the farmers market became a Responsible Cafe, which offers a 50-cent discount to customers who bring their own cups. The Bondi Muggers were named as a catalyst for this transition, and in 2016, they retired their mug library in favour of promoting personal responsibility.
