Community Composting at Transition Bondi
First of all thank you to our regular veg scrap donors for your patience during covid-19 and the temporary closure of the compost bins. As restrictions are easing, we are opening the Community Composting System again.
It’s wonderful that so many people are involved in this system and dedicated to converting their scraps into soil instead of sending them to landfill where they release methane, a potent greenhouse gas! I’m including a little info on ‘how to compost’ so the system stays healthy and non-smelly (which is important to keep our neighbours happy and in turn keep the garden and compost system in existence). Even if you have been composting with us for a while, I’d really appreciate you reading and following the steps below, it’s always good to have a refresher! As a thank you for being involved we would like to give you some compost to take home for your own pot plants or garden, come along to one of our working Bee’s to collect some (info at the bottom).
As we re-open could we ask everyone to limit donations to ~1 litre a week for the next few weeks so as not to overwhelm the bins! 🙂
COVID-19 Safety
We ask that you follow these guidelines when coming to the garden for the safety of yourself and others.
- Please wash your hands and/or use hand sanitiser before and after adding to the compost.
- Physically distance from others when in the garden
- DO NOT come to the garden if you are ill.
How to contribute to the Community Composting System
Figure out what can and can’t go in a compost bin
- YES
Vegetable Scraps (in small pieces)
Shredded paper or cardboard - NO
Dairy
Meats
Eggs
Bokashi or fermented vegetable waste – while they are compostable they have a strong odour which we do not want to disrupt our neighbours with, so we do not accept them at our garden
Plastic bags – even the ‘compostable ones’ make the compost difficult to manage
Any other kinds of plastic including bottle lids, fruit stickers, elastic bands etc – please remove these from your scraps
Find an “OPEN” compost bin to add your scraps to!
Follow these 3 simple steps: Green, Turn, Brown… it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!
So now you have your veg scraps ready and know which bin to add them too, just three simple steps to add your scraps and help nurture the compost and minimise smell.
1. Add your vegetable scraps (aka “greens”).
2. Turn with a compost augers (giant cork screw that lives next to the bins).
Here is a little video of someone using one. Note: if you go too deep and can’t pull it out, just twist the other way and it will come back out!!
3. Add browns (aka, mulch). There is a green bin of mulch next to the compost bins. Please add a scoop after stirring.
The community garden is at the back of 241 Bondi Road. If you stick to the left hand side and go down the side of the building to the back, you will find the community garden and compost bins.
Lastly, I’d like to invite you to our monthly Working Bee which is in the Garden on the Second Sunday of the month 10am-12noon. We need to limit numbers at the moment to follow physical distancing, so please RSVP by emailing [email protected] if you’d like to join the next one on the 14th June.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out.
Yours in Transition,
Jade and the Transition Bondi Team 🌻
