A little garden update 

October put a smile on the face of our gardening team.  The nicely spaced rain allowed some of our veggies to raise their heads and rear up to the sun, when it appeared in short bursts!  What seemed like some insignificant little seedlings only a short time ago, suddenly announced themselves as solid, reputable purple-topped turnips.  Perfect for soups and roasts. 

And our lettuces also displaying themselves – the frilled variety – good to pick leaf by leaf from the outside, and they just kept on giving!  And as always we showed restraint by leaving the best specimen to produce our seed for the next crops.  

That is the part about gardening I love most, letting the whole life cycle of the plant be completed so that we see the flowers – for the bees to ‘work on’ – and we wait (patiently) for the fertilisation process to complete itself in the form of seeds.

Seeds come in such a variety of shapes and sizes – and have different shelf-lives.  Their cases are diverse too – some in pods (chickpeas grow in little pods holding only two peas each!), some on the end of ‘umbrella’ structures, and some sitting baldly and boldly on the stem just where the petals fell from.
