Call of the Reed Warbler, by Charles Massy – A book review by Lara Taylor
Carl Jung allegedly said, ‘The way of nature will bring you back quite naturally wherever you have to go’, and Charles Massy brings us example after example of the truth of this, in his 2017 book ‘Call of the Reed Warbler’.
He talks about the way our current agricultural system evolved, naming its driver the ‘Mechanical Mind’, and discusses its limitations; namely the way chemicals and the use of fertilisers rob the soil of its natural abilities and create a cycle of dependency. He compares this then, to the newer, and perhaps bolder ‘Emerging Mind’, and describes situation after situation where farmers, often in times of dire crisis, have reduced their need for chemicals or fertilisers, and let the natural intelligence of nature unfold, thus increasing yields, profitability, and the health of the soil.
It’s a complete head spin. In Charles Massy’s world, soils are deeply healed, landscapes incredibly rejuvenated, and food tastier and healthier. He cites example after example; farmers who on the brink of breakdown, have tried different methods, and obtained extraordinary results. He takes us deeply into the world of regenerative farming, or natural intelligence farming, and shows us the way, and provides a whole heap of resources, should we want to explore further.
An amazing book. To be read at least once ????
