A recognition of Transition Bondi by the Waverley Local Hero Award
Last Monday 17th of May 2021, Kit Shepherd received the Waverley Local Hero Award in the Second Nature Category!
Her dedication to Transition Bondi is nicely described in her kind words, which we would like to share with the broader Transition Bondi’s community:
“This moment of ‘limelight’ on me is very much about acknowledging the amazing group – Transition Bondi as a whole.
First and foremost I blow the trumpet for Lance Lieber, who was ignited by the work of Rob Hopkins, Joanna Macey and others in 2009, and started a Transition Town group in Bondi (we don’t all want to move ‘to the country’ as he said).
And ongoing – with a small cheer squad (including me) he set the foundation for an exciting, creative, hard-working and energetic community of people, very concerned about environmental and social issues and wanting to be part of the change. We were attracted by the values of the Transition Towns movement: among others inclusiveness, collaboration, compassion and commitment.
I joined Transition Bondi (part of the global Transition Towns movement) in its early days, in 2010, looking to develop connections with my new local neighbourhood. A small group of passionate, community-minded buddies developed programs to bring people together around environmental issues. Our Film & Feast events, Farmers Market Stalls, Community Garden, Inner Transition evenings, and Steering Group, have attracted a large number of people from different backgrounds who want to bring change in themselves and the world.
Convening this group in recent years has given me the opportunity to keep using and expanding my skills, as a retiree from the world of adult community education. It’s a very motivating thing, to work closely in a team and to learn from each other as we care for the environment and build community.”
Thank you to all the volunteers, who are making our communities more human! Keep up the good work.
